Early life
Malik McDowell was born on June 20, 1996, in Detroit, Michigan. He is the son of Greg McDowell and Joya Crowe. In his early years, he attended Loyola High School in Detroit.
After graduating high school, McDowell enrolled in Michigan State. During his time there, he was rated a five-star recruit. This attracted offers from dozens of schools. Despite his parents’ concerns, McDowell committed to MSU.
Although he played well at Michigan State, he also lacked discipline during games and the week. Coaches at the school excused his lack of effort because of his talent.
Before his senior year, Malik was arrested for assaulting a police officer and driving while intoxicated. The video of the incident went viral.
Despite the incident, McDowell was drafted by the Seattle Seahawks in the second round of the NFL draft. Upon signing, he received a $3.2 million signing bonus. However, he has yet to play a single NFL game.
Signing bonus
The Seahawks are suing former draft pick Malik McDowell in federal court in Michigan. The lawsuit claims that the newest member of the Seahawks octothorpe has failed to repay a $800,000 signing bonus.
The suit also claims that the team has incurred costs in its quest to make McDowell pay. Despite having invested a small fortune in McDowell, the club has been slow to implement a strategy to get its money’s worth.
Earlier this spring, McDowell was waived with an injury designation. He did not play a down for the Seahawks. During the course of a year, he suffered a host of injuries. In one notable instance, McDowell was injured in an ATV accident in July. Not only did he suffer a traumatic brain injury, but he also lost a lot of weight.
However, it was McDowell’s decision to not take advantage of the team’s best interest. After a stint on the non-football injured list, McDowell was rewarded with a reduced salary of $85,000 per season. While this may seem like pocket change to some, it is a big chunk of the $4.5 million McDowell was expected to receive by the end of his four-year deal.
Car collection
Malik McDowell is a free agent who was arrested twice in less than a week after an ATV crash in 2017. This incident is the latest in a long line of legal problems for the former Michigan State Spartan.
In September, McDowell was pulled over for a DUI. He was also charged with driving on a suspended license. His blood alcohol level was more than double the legal limit.
Later in the month, he was arrested for disorderly conduct. Then in February, he was charged with resisting an officer. Another arrest was for possessing a stolen vehicle.
After an arrest in April, McDowell admitted to receiving stolen property. During the arrest, McDowell reportedly punched an officer in the chest.
He later received a three-month jail sentence for the incident. Previously, he had been on probation for driving under the influence.
According to court documents, McDowell had a blood alcohol concentration of more than twice the legal limit. During the arrest, he attempted to take a cop’s gun and strike the officer with a fist. During the arrest, another police officer used a Taser on McDowell.
